My Role
Hot & Cold was a team project I started to solve a recurring problem in my life: losing objects. In a team of 2 product designers, I undertook competitive analysis, user survey , building informational architecuture, product prototyping and usability testings.
The Solution
Offer GPS, vertical and Augmented Reality View on a Smart Watch Device.
Attach and register Bluetooth tags to objects
  • Pair the Bluetooth tags to track non-electronic items
  • Follow the sound alarm that activates in the app.
Pair and tag items
  • Select a Category and add a new item to the devices list.
  • Name and Pair Item using Bluetooth Connection.
Receive unusual status through alerts
  • Check if you’re moving away from a registered device.
  • Be notified when a faraway registered device is moving in case of theft.
Navigate to the object using GPS
  • Select Object to Navigate from the registered devices list.
  • Check the location and distance of the object from your current location.
Track close by objects
  • Switch to the vertical view mode to see if the object is located higher or lower.
  • Click the alarm button to follow the sound to find close by objects.

Design Question
Design a smart watch app that offers multiple methods to locate lost items.
The Problem
The Lack of An Efficient And Reliable System To Track And Locate Lost Items
*According to the "Lost & Found Survey" by Pixie
The Process
User Survey Statistics
Conducted on 20 participants online
Key Insights
The survey revealed that mobile phones take up a large percentage of item trackers, while also being one of the major items that participants lost.
User Interviews
Conducted on 3 interviewees who have useditem trackers
Offering new and efficient solutions
The user research helped us outline features to overcome the limitations users face when using item tracking technology.
Competitive Analysis
The competitive analysis with  tracking apps suggested that Hot & Cold’s tool set would be truly unique in the market.
Meet Julian,
Julian is a college student and a smart watch user, who finds himself losing his items often.
Julian's User Journey
Informational Architecture
Julian’s use case helped us identify the steps the user would navigate Hot & Cold and build the user flow accordingly.
Wireframes
Fitting Elements In A Small Screen
We created wireframes to explore how we can lay out information in a small-sized smart watch screen.
Usability Test
Identifying Unusable Areas
We conducted usability test to find areas where users struggle completing given tasks and collect feedback.
Version 1
Personalized Relaxing Experience
Our initial prototype focused on allowing user customization to provide an experience just right for them.
A Wider Map With One Item
We decided to enlarge the map size and add distance and an alarm button. The GPS map now focuses on one item at a time to avoid confusion.
Better Integration of Vertical View
Instead of entering close range mode, now the vertical view is integrated into the main UI and can be switch back and forth with the GPS map.
Labeled Item Category List
The item list is changed to a list of category boxes with text labels to indicate what kind of items the user can add to the device list.
3D Modeling
Designing the Bluetooth Tag
Using Cinema 4D, I made a 3d model of an attachable  Bluetooth tag with a built-in speaker.
The Outcome
Identifying Unusable Areas
Julian’s use case helped us identify the steps the user would navigate Hot & Cold and build the user flow accordingly.
Add Device
Users can check the list of registered devices and add a new device by selecting their category.
Name Device
Users can name their device by recording their name using microphone, or type using a touch-screen keyboard.
Track Object
Users can track object using GPS Map and Vertical View to track objects in relation to their current distance.
Alerts
Users can track object using GPS Map and Vertical View to track objects in relation to their current distance.
